It was interesting to see former head coach Brian Bohannon before the game greeting his former team on the Owl Walk. At halftime, he was on the concourse with numerous fans coming up and shaking his hand telling him how much they admired his work over the years and wishing him well.

He was here mainly as a proud father watching his kids play football. But, also as a surrogate dad for all the players he recruited and coached over their playing time here at KSU. He will be missed. Always gracious and optimistic.

It was also nice to see his sons, Blake and Braden Bohannon, on the field as honorary captains for the coin toss.

Dealing with the loss of the only head coach they had ever known to facing a 7-2 playoff bound opponent, the Owls showed some grit overcoming a lot of adversity to keep the game close with the game tied at 3, again at 10 and again at 17 before finally going into overtime.

A missed field goal in OT made it easy for Sam Houston (8-2, 5-1 CUSA) who then needed any points to put the game away. They got that as quarterback Hunter Watson scampered into the end zone for the 23-17 victory. The second overtime loss for the Owls in two weeks.

Defense dominated the first half with KSU getting on the board first with a 25 yard Austin Welch field goal. The Bearkats tied it just before the half with a 29 yarder of their own. Watson put SHSU ahead with a 25 yard touchdown run, but gave the Owls some new life as JeRico Washington picked Watson off at the 7. Kennesaw State took advantage of the short field with a Michael Benefield score to tie it at 10.

In the fourth quarter, the Bearkats hit paydirt first with a Jay Ducker TD pushing their lead to 17-10 with just under two minutes remaining. But, KSU QB Davi Bryson led an impressive game tying drive that culminated with a clutch Carson Kent score with just 25 seconds left in regulation. Game tied for the third time at 17.

In overtime, the Owls got the ball first, but saw their 36 yard field goal sail wide left. The miss opened the door for Sam Houston. Watson sprinted for a 10 yard touchdown on just three plays sealing a hard-fought 23-17 victory. The loss dropped KSU to 1-9 overall, 1-5 CUSA).

KSU regroups and hosts FIU (2-4, 0-3 CUSA) next Saturday in another Conference USA matchup in another Saturday 3:00 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+. The Panthers are coming off a touch 34-31 loss at Jax State.

Kennesaw State (1-8, 1-4 CUSA) returns home on Saturday for another Conference USA matchup. It will be the Owls’ first ever game without former head coach Brian Bohannon at the helm. Bohannon was fired on Sunday following the double overtime loss at UTEP.

Kennesaw State alum and football letterwinner Chandler Burks, who has been serving this season as co-offensive coordinator, will be the interim head coach for the remaining three games.

The Bearkats (7-2, 4-1 CUSA) enter the game riding a wave of momentum with wins in six of their last seven outings. The are coming off a narrow 9-3 win against Louisiana Tech. Offensively, Sam Houston has averaged 24.9 points per game, with quarterback Hunter Watson leading the charge, throwing for over 1,100 yards this season. The Bearkats’ ground game is potent, averaging nearly 200 rushing yards per game, spearheaded by running back Jay Ducker, who has accumulated 469 yards and six touchdowns.

In contrast, the Owls have struggled throughout the season, managing only one improbable win over previously unbeaten Liberty against eight losses. Their latest performance was a hard-fought double overtime battle 43-35 against UTEP.

KSU’s offense has been less prolific, averaging just 17.1 points per game, with quarterback Davis Bryson completing nearly 55% of his passes for over 1,000 yards but also facing challenges with turnovers.

The Owls will need to improve their defensive performance, which has allowed an average of 32.4 points per game, if they hope to compete against a strong Sam Houston team.

As you might expect, the Bearkats are heavily favored, currently listed as 14.5-point favorites. The total points for the game are set at 42.5, indicating expectations for a relatively low-scoring affair given both teams’ recent performances.

The two teams met last year on November 4 with Sam Houston winning 24-21 on a last second field goal. It was the Bearkats’ first ever win at the FBS level.

The game is Family Weekend, Salute to Service Game, Hall of Fame Weekend and Varsity Day. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. broadcast on ESPN+.

Owls Ride Momentum Of Big Win to Face Another #1 Team at Western Kentucky http://kennesawstatesports.com/owls-ride-momentum-of-big-win-to-face-another-1-team-at-western-kentucky-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=owls-ride-momentum-of-big-win-to-face-another-1-team-at-western-kentucky-2 Fri, 25 Oct 2024 15:09:53 +0000 https://kennesawstatesports.com/?p=55396

Kennesaw State heads to Western Kentucky for still another midweek matchup on Wednesday, October 30, at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

This will be the second straight week that the Owls take on the #1 team in Conference USA after their stunning 24-21 victory over Liberty.

Kennesaw State enters with a challenging 1-6 record in their inaugural FBS season. Despite their struggles, the Owls are coming off a monumental upset victory over Liberty, which has breathed new life and energy into their campaign. It marked KSU’s first-ever victory over an FBS program in 11 attempts.

WKU, on the other hand, boasts a solid 5-2 record and are one of only two undefeated teams in Conference USA play. They’ve shown consistency and are looking to maintain their position at the top of the conference standings.

The Owls’ offense has been led by quarterback Davis Bryson and a trio of running backs: Qua Ashley, Michael Benefield, and Preston Daniels. Their ground-heavy approach has been the cornerstone of the offense, averaging 23.4 pass attempts per game.

For the Hilltoppers, keep an eye on Elijah Young, accumulating 375 rushing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 3.7 yards per carry. He’s also a threat in the passing game with 24 receptions. WKU quarterback Caden Veltkamp has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. Veltkamp had an efficient performance in WKU’s 31-14 win over Sam Houston on Wednesday in Huntsville, Texas, to help his team improve to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in CUSA play. He threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-29 passing.

The Owls will need to find ways to improve their scoring output, as they’ve been averaging only 13 points per game, although they improved on that by 11 points in the upset win against Liberty .

The Hilltoppers will try to exploit Kennesaw State’s vulnerabilities on defense. Given the Owls’ struggles against the run (they allowed over 300 yards and eight rushing touchdowns in a previous loss), WKU may focus on establishing their ground game early.

KSU’s offense has been one of the least productive in the FBS, ranking 130th out of 134 programs with an average of 14.6 points per game before their upset win. Their defense has also struggled, allowing an average of 36 points per game in their first five contests.

Kennesaw State’s shocking 27-24 victory over previously undefeated Liberty was a season-defining moment. This win demonstrated the team’s potential and resilience, especially considering they entered the game as significant underdogs.

This game holds significant implications for the Conference USA standings. The Hilltoppers are one of the two undefeated teams in conference play and looking to hold on to their new spot at the top. A win for Kennesaw State could shake up the conference hierarchy and potentially impact the race for the conference championship.

While specific betting odds for this matchup are not provided in the search results, it’s likely that Western Kentucky will enter the game as significant favorites given their record and home-field advantage. However, Kennesaw State’s recent upset victory over Liberty suggests they shouldn’t be underestimated.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 30, and will be televised on ESPN2.

Owls Stun First Place Flames As Crowd Storms The Field…Twice! http://kennesawstatesports.com/owls-stun-first-place-flames-as-crowd-storms-the-field/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=owls-stun-first-place-flames-as-crowd-storms-the-field http://kennesawstatesports.com/owls-stun-first-place-flames-as-crowd-storms-the-field/#comments Thu, 24 Oct 2024 16:04:39 +0000 https://kennesawstatesports.com/?p=54618

By Don Stone, KennesawStateSports.com, FootballAtlanta.com

It was a thrilling Wednesday night game that made national headlines as a “monumental win” with fans and students storming the field for the first time that I can remember at Fifth Third Stadium…and they had to do it again!

A historic victory for Kennesaw State against Liberty, ending the Flames’ 17-game regular-season winning streak with a score of 27-24. It was the Owls’ first win over an FBS team in ten tries.

Before the start, I turned to another reporter in the press box and said, “I haven’t seen anything that tells me this is going to be anything but a beat down.” He agreed.

Boy, were we wrong. It started out looking that way, though, as the Flames moved down the field easily.

Quarterback Kaidon Salter connected with Treon Sibley for a 15-yard touchdown pass on an 11 play 73 drive that took just 5:22, setting the tone for what many expected to be a straightforward victory for the visitors.

But, Kennesaw State quickly responded with an impressive drive of their own. Quarterback Davis Bryson threw a precise hit Christian Moss downfield in stride for a quick 41-yard touchdown pass, leveling the score at 7-7. It was the first TD for Moss since transferring from Virginia Tech.

As the first half progressed, both teams exchanged blows. Kennesaw State’s Michael Benefield rushed for a one-yard touchdown, giving the Owls a brief lead. But Liberty orchestrated a nice 12-play, 81-yard drive that culminated in Salter finding Donte Lee Jr. in the end zone for another touchdown just before halftime.

The teams entered the locker rooms tied at 14-14, with it appearing that the Flames had gotten momentum back from the Owls.

The third quarter saw KSU shift into high gear. After a quick three-and-out by Liberty, the Owls, who only had 37 yards rushing in the first half, saw their ground attack step up, nearly tripling that in the second half.

They executed a nine-play, 60-yard drive that ended with Qua Ashley scoring on a six-yard run, putting Kennesaw State ahead again 21-14.

Liberty attempted to respond but had a tough time moving the ball effectively against Kennesaw State’s defense. They had to settle for a field goal from Colin Karhu to narrow the gap to 21-17, but it was clear that the Owls had found their earlier momentum.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, KSU extended their lead further to ten points with two field goals from Austin Welch—one from 31 yards and another from 41 yards—pushing their advantage to 27-17.

With time running out, Liberty wasn’t done, mounting one last offensive push. Salter threw his third touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Elijah Canion for a 17-yard score with just under two minutes remaining, bringing the Flames to within three points at 27-24.

   Liberty failed an onside kick.

The Flames did manage to stop Kennesaw State on fourth down shortly after and regained possession with only ten seconds left on the clock. A pass sailed out of bounds with the clock appearing to run out and a jubilant fan base stormed the field.

But, the celebration was short-lived as review showed there was still one second on the clock. The polite crowd efficiently vacated the field allowing the teams to regroup for one last play.

A desperate lateral attempt resulted in a fumble as the Owl defense held firm, sealing their improbable victory.

The win not only marked Kennesaw State’s first victory of the season but also represented a significant achievement for head coach Brian Bohannon and his team. With this victory over an undefeated opponent, they became the first team in over two decades to defeat an unbeaten squad while holding an overall record of 0-5 or worse at kickoff.

The head coach showed immense pride in his team’s resilience and unity throughout what had been a challenging season.

“For the past month and a half, all we discussed was the importance of unity and faith in each other,” he stated post-game. “We believed that if we persevered, something positive would eventually occur.”

In all fairness, it must be noted that Liberty helped KSU with multiple costly penalties, two of which extended drives on third and long.

The loss not only ended their undefeated streak but also posed challenges for their chances within Conference USA and a potential playoff shot.

Several streaks ended for the Flames…
  * 20 straight vs Conference USA teams.
  * 17 straight in regular season.
  * 11 straight in October.
  * 5 straight overall.

It also knocked the Flames out of first place down to third and moved the Owls up from last place all the way to seventh place.

KSU’s victory serves as a turning point for their season and could provide much-needed momentum as they look ahead. Meanwhile, the Flames will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face second place Jacksonville State, undefeated in conference play, next week in hopes of bouncing back from this unexpected setback.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Owls as they take the show on the road to face the new #1 Conference USA team at Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers are 5-2 and 3-0 in conference. But, this time ,KSU will arrive with some wind at their back knowing anything is possible.

Kickoff on Saturday is 7:30pm. You can watch on ESPN2.

Kennesaw State Hosts Conference Champion Liberty on Wednesday Night http://kennesawstatesports.com/kennesaw-state-hosts-conference-champion-liberty-on-wednesday-night/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kennesaw-state-hosts-conference-champion-liberty-on-wednesday-night Thu, 17 Oct 2024 21:12:37 +0000 https://kennesawstatesports.com/?p=86320

By Don Stone – KennesawStateSports.com, FootballAtlanta.com

It’s another midweek night game for Kennesaw State as an old rival, Liberty, comes to Fifth Third Stadium.

The Flames were one of the Owls’ original rivals in the early days of the football program. They Owls entered football back in 2015 as part of the Big South Conference. Liberty was the dominant force at the time with eight conference championships under their belt. Like KSU is doing this season, the Flames made the move up to the FBS level, but as an independent, in 2018 before joining Conference USA in 2023. The Flames won their first Conference USA championship and FBS conference title last season in their first year in the conference.

Liberty (5-0, 3-0 Conference) is 2-1 all-time against the Owls, with all three meetings coming back when both teams were Big South Conference members (2015-17).

Kennesaw State (0-5, 0-1 Conference) is still seeking their first victory of the season after a tough start, characterized by five consecutive losses since moving up to the FBS level themselves and joining Conference USA.

This game is probably their least likely chance to find that win with Liberty owning the nation’s longest active regular-season winning streak (17 games). The Flames have also equaled the program record of six straight road victories and won 20 consecutive matchups with CUSA foes.

Head Coach Jamey Chadwell is in his second year at Liberty and will coach his 20th game with the Flames on Wednesday. He is 18-1 at Liberty and owns a 49-7 coaching record dating back to the start of 2020.

Inconsistency has plagued the Owls’ efforts. Quarterback Davis Bryson has thrown for 616 yards with 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, while running back Michael Benefield leads the ground game with 194 rushing yards and a touchdown. Bryson was actually replaced by a committee of QBs in last Tuesday’s 14-5 conference loss at Middle Tennessee in an attempt by Head Coach Brian Bohannon to create a spark. The score tells you that the new guys were not very effective in putting up points.

The Owls will need to tighten their defense and find a rhythm on offense to even make it competitive against Liberty.

In stark contrast, the Flames are riding high with an undefeated record and are currently dominating their conference.

Quarterback Kaidon Salter has been impressive, throwing for over 1,000 yards with 7 touchdowns and just 1 interception. Running back Quinton Cooley has also been a standout performer with 545 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns this season. Liberty’s balanced attack and solid defense has been a winning formula.

Game time is 7:00 PM ET. It can be seen on the CBS Sports Network.

Kennesaw State (0-5, 0-1 CUSA) takes it’s quest for a first win of the season on the road to Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro for a strange Tuesday night game staying in the conference on October 15th. The weeknight game does give the Owls an 11 day break.

They might have a shot in that one with the Blue Raiders (1-5, 0-2 CUSA) also struggling out of the gate in a five game losing stream. They’re coming off a tough 48-21 conference road game Thursday night October 10 loss at Louisiana Tech. Unlike the Owls, they’ll be playing on just five days rest.

But, as head coach Brian Bohannon pointed out in his Friday press conference, the Blue Raiders have played some tough teams in Ole Miss, Duke and Memphis along the way.

The Owls are coming off a lopsided 63-24 conference home loss last weekend. Jax State was so dominant that they got both the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week award (Tyler Huff) and Defensive Player of the Week award (Zechariah Poyser).
Huff rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns while Poyser picked off a pair of passes.

KSU redshirt sophomore quarterback Davis Bryson has thrown for 540 yards with one touchdown but has also faced challenges with three interceptions. The running game, led by Bryson himself with 89 rushing yards, has not yet found its rhythm this season.

On the other hand, the Blue Raiders have managed one victory this season but have also faced significant challenges, including a recent loss to Duke (45-17). Redshirt junior QB Nicholas Vattiato has shown promise with 1,285 passing yards and five touchdowns, but inconsistency has plagued the offense.

The standout player for MTSU has been junior running back Jaiden Credle, who has amassed 233 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a single game this season

KSU at MTSU Kickoff is 8:00 p.m. The game can again be see on the CBS Sports Network.

KSU Dominated At Home 63-24 By Jax State In First Conference USA Game http://kennesawstatesports.com/ksu-dominated-at-home-63-24-by-jax-state-in-first-conference-usa-game/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ksu-dominated-at-home-63-24-by-jax-state-in-first-conference-usa-game Fri, 04 Oct 2024 23:23:49 +0000 https://kennesawstatesports.com/?p=67695

  By Don Stone – KennesawStateSports.com, FootballAtlanta.com

The way the game started was a sign of how the whole game would go. The Owls got the ball first and went a quick three and out.

A different story for the Gamecocks as running back Tre Stewart ran for 25 yards on the first play to the KSU34.  Quarterback Tyler Huff kept it for an 8 yard gain to the 27.  Stewart again for 10 to the 17 and 16 for a first and goal at the one. He carried it across the goal line for a quick 7-0 lead.

The Owls fought valiantly throughout, but were just overmatched. At one point, trailing 21-3, KSU put up 14 unanswered points to pull to within 4 at the half.

But, the third quarter saw the Gamecocks match that output and more with 21 in a row of their own to pretty much put the game out of reach, doubling the score at 49-17.

For the most part, the Owls just had no answer for the offensive combination of Huff and Stewart. Both cranked out over a hundred yards rushing.
And, it wasn’t like the defense could key in on those two’s ground game with Huff having an equal amount of success through the air hitting Cam Vaughn for seven catches and 96 yards or Michael Pettway (26), Floyd Lacey (21) and Jacob Barrick (20) getting near equal distribution to keep them off balance.

Add to that a salt in the wound Jabari Mack pick six that allowed the Jax State defense to get in on the act.

The Owls did break the streak briefly when Benefield got a nice 59 yard run, taking it in for a meaningless score to make it 49-24. Even with that, it was still a 25 point differential. That didn’t last long with Huff and Stewart quickly getting the points back with still another score to return the lead to 32.

Jax State outgained the Owls in total yard 577-240 even though the time of possession was relatively even.

The biggest surprise at that point was the fact that Rich Rodriguez still had his starters in the final minutes of the game.

The Jax State points were the most scored by a Conference USA team so far this season.

Kennesaw State (0-5, 0-1 CUSA) takes it’s quest for a first win of the season on the road to Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro for a strange Tuesday night game staying in the conference on October 15th. The weeknight game does give the Owls an 11 day break.

They might have a shot in that one with the Blue Raiders (1-4, 0-1 CUSA) also struggling out of the gate and a conference road game before then at Louisiana Tech on October 10. Unlike the Owls, they’ll be playing on just five days rest. KSU at MT Kickoff is 8:00 p.m.

Owls Begin Conference USA Play At Home Friday Night With Jax State http://kennesawstatesports.com/owls-begin-conference-usa-play-at-home-friday-night-with-jax-state/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=owls-begin-conference-usa-play-at-home-friday-night-with-jax-state Fri, 04 Oct 2024 15:21:40 +0000 https://kennesawstatesports.com/?p=66382

A new era begins Friday night at Fifth Third Stadium as the Owls host their first ever Conference USA game against a familiar foe in Jacksonville State.

The Gamecocks come into the game at 1-3, fresh off a dominant 44-7 victory against Southern Miss where quarterback Tyler Huff threw for 236 yards and rushed for another 77 yards.

The Gamecocks put up six plays of 20 yards or more in their win against Southern Miss.

Kennesaw State has struggled with this year’s move up to the FBS level still looking for their first win in four tries. They have yet to score more than 16 points in any game. Their last outing ended in a 24-13 Homecoming loss to FCS level Tennessee Martin (2-3).

There is quite a bit of history between KSU and JSU, having met four times since 2017. The Owls have won all but one, which was their last meeting on October 1, 2022, (35-28).

One of those games was perhaps the greatest in KSU football history. It was one of the top two games I can ever remember being at then Suntrust Park. The game went back and forth for five overtimes. In a heroic effort, Chandler Burks (recently named as the first Owl football player to the KSU Hall of Fame and now the team’s offensive coordinator) simply refused to lose and willed his team to an astounding 5OT 60-52 victory.

Key Players to Watch

Jacksonville State: Tyler Huff (QB)

But, back to this one. Huff will be the player to watch for Jax State. He’s a handful to defend combining his passing and rushing abilities to keep defenses on their toes. His success will be important if the Gamecocks are going to cover the hefty 16.5-point spread set by oddsmakers..

Kennesaw State: Davis Bryson (QB)

As Kennesaw’s starting QB, Bryson will need to step up big time if the Owls hope to turn their season around Friday night. With only one touchdown and three interceptions so far, he faces a ton of pressure to improve against a tough Jacksonville defense.

Kennesaw State’s struggles on both sides of the ball might keep it close. But, they have the talent to pull off an upset. They have to play mistake free to do so.

Kickoff is Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network.

Kennesaw State Drops Wet Homecoming Game To UT Martin 24-13

By Don Stone, KennesawStateSports.com, FootballAtlanta.com

Kennesaw State hosted UT Martin for Homecoming on Saturday, hoping to get on the winning track after opening their first season in the FBS with three losses.

Looking at the Owls’ schedule, this looked like a winnable game as the only FCS team they would play.  But, it was clearly the Skyhawks’ game with KSU’s offense only able to manage a pair of field goals with their other points coming on a pick six.

UT Martin came in having lost three of their first four games after a 31-24 defeat at home to Missouri State.

The game kicked off under the lights with both teams looking good on defense. The first quarter ended scoreless, with KSU struggling to gain momentum, running just three plays. UT Martin’s defense dominated early, limiting the Owls to a mere two total yards in the opening frame.

As the second quarter began, a steady drizzle began that lasted for most of the rest of the night.

It didn’t affect UT Martin’s senior running back Patrick Smith, who broke the deadlock with a 7-yard touchdown run, capping off a lengthy 16-play drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock.

Kennesaw State quickly responded when Jayven Williams stepped in front of a Kindead Dent pass intended for Trevonte Rucker and took it the distance for a 48 yard pick six to tie the game at seven.

Both teams exchanged field goals before halftime.  KSU’s Austin Welch nailed a 49-yard field goal as time expired, tying the game at 10-10 and giving the Owls a glimmer of hope heading into the locker room.

The third quarter proved pivotal for UT Martin. Just minutes into the half, Oshae Baker returned the favor and intercepted a Bryson Davis pass returning it 63 yards for a touchdown, shifting momentum firmly in favor of the Skyhawks at 17-10.

UT Martin continued to build on its advantage with another impressive drive that culminated in Smith’s second TD of the night—a 21-yard run that extended their lead to 24-10 and, for all intents and purposes, ended the game. Kennesaw State’s offense struggled to respond, managing only another field goal in the fourth quarter.

One bright spot in the game came in the third quarter when punter Jacob Ulrich came in and, instead of kicking, completed a long 32 yard pass to Blake Bohannon at the 36, who advanced it to the 15.
But, the snap on third and 9 was fumbled by Bryson.
After a delay of game, Welch connected from 38 to settle for just 3.

An indicator of how difficult it was for the KSU offense, head coach Brian Bohannon was forced to go for it on fourth down six different times.

The 24-13 victory was only the second by the Skyhawks against an FBS opponent since 2012. Smith finished with an impressive 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Baker’s interception return proved to be a game-changer.

Kennesaw State fell to 0-4 on the season, struggling offensively despite some bright spots on defense.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Owls’ as they host an old rival with the start of their Conference USA schedule against JSU. Both teams are recent arrivals in CUSAl with the Gamecocks joining last season. That game is an  unusual Friday night matchup with a 7:00 pm kickoff at Fifth Third Stadium…an odd scheduling decision by someone competing with area high school football games. The game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
