Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State—both first place in Conference USA—are set for a marquee showdown on November 15, with memories still fresh from their epic five-overtime thriller at SunTrust Park. This year’s clash brings championship stakes, surging win streaks, and star power on both sidelines.
Big Showdown Preview – The Owls travel to AmFirst Stadium riding a seven-game win streak, the longest in Group of Six football and among the top five in the FBS. Head coach Jerry Mack highlighted the team’s resilience this week: “This group has found ways to win, even when things get tough. They believe in each other and know what’s at stake with a trip to Jacksonville State.” Quarterback Amari Odom, coming off a strong 219-yard performance against New Mexico State, said, “We’re hungry. Our focus is execution—finish drives, minimize mistakes, and keep playing fast.”
Jacksonville State, unbeaten at home and winners of four straight, presents a balanced, physical threat led by their own dynamic rushing attack. Gamecocks coach Charles Kelly stated, “Kennesaw State knows how to make you pay for lapses. We have to be sound on both sides, especially given their quick strike ability and athletic quarterback.”
Both teams rank among the league leaders in scoring and defensive stops, setting the stage for a tightly contested battle that likely will decide the regular-season crown.
Rivalry and Previous Meetings – These two teams have had a lot of big games together going back to their days when they were both in the Big South Conference. The rivalry’s most memorable chapter was the five-overtime thriller at Truist Park (then SunTrust Park), on November 17, 2018 where both sides traded blows deep into the night before Chandler Burks (now the Tight Ends Coach for Army) and KSU finally emerged victorious 60-52.
Keys to the Game – Fast starts: KSU leads the nation in first quarter point differential (+6.1), while JSU is among the best at red zone efficiency (92.1% scoring rate).
Star performances: Odom’s passing and Gabriel Benyard’s explosive receiving for KSU meet JSU’s Cam Cook, who’s topped 1,200 rushing yards.
Discipline: Both teams come in penalty-prone off their last contests, but expect an emphasis on clean football with so much on the line.
Change the Pattern: The Owls have repeatedly gotten off to big leads early only to let up and allow the opponent to get back into the game. They need to stay consistent throughout all four quarters against the Gamecocks to come away with the victory.
Saturday’s game will be nationally televised on ESPNU at 8 p.m. ET, with the winner likely securing the top seed for the Conference USA championship.
Expect a playoff-like intensity as two talented, battle-tested leaders—Jerry Mack and Charles Kelly—send their teams into a clash that could echo the drama of their legendary overtime meeting, but this time with the league title on the line.
